Located just an hour away from Puerto Vallarta, this journey takes you deep into the Pine Forest and Subtropical subdeciduous rainforest, one of the region’s most diverse and scenic natural areas. Here, we begin our adventure surrounded by native forests that serve as home to a remarkable variety of tropical and endemic bird species.
Our first stop is the mountain forest, where the crisp air and dense canopy create the perfect environment for observing colorful tanagers, trogons, flycatchers, and hummingbirds. As we continue, we’ll explore ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks—silent witnesses of the cultures that once thrived in these mountains.
Next, we enter the deciduous forest, where the changing vegetation reveals a new chorus of birds and the unique balance between dry and tropical ecosystems. We’ll conclude our tour in Boca de Tomatlán, a picturesque coastal village where the river meets the sea. Here, we’ll take a peaceful moment to review our bird checklist, share sightings, and enjoy a light lunch surrounded by the sounds of nature and ocean breeze.
This experience is more than birdwatching—it’s a journey through landscapes, history, and the vibrant life that connects them all.

Know Before You Book the Feathered Trail Tour & Petroglifos
Fitness level: Moderate flexible. Most walks are not difficult, but some moderate walks on natural trails or unpaved roads will be necessary.
- Children under 8 years of age and pregnant women are not allowed.
- People with back, neck, heart or knee problems are not recommended.
- Children from 8 to 11 years old must be accompanied by a paying adult.
- Not accessible for wheelchairs.
- All participants must be able to walk on their own for short distances over natural or unpaved trails.
Itinerary
6:30 am
6:30am Meet with your guide and the rest of the birders in our office at Marina Vallarta, where we’ll board ourcomfortable vehicle and drive to the south of the Bay (any other meeting point will be confirmed once your tour is scheduled). We’ll visit the mountain forest, stop by ancient petroglyphs, and walk through the deciduous forest, spotting tropical and endemic bird species along the way.
Deep in the forest we will visit Ejido Emiliano Zapata, where, due to the tranquility of the area, we will be able to observe subtropical subdeciduous rainforest birds.
Driving back, by mid-morning we’ll be arriving at Boca de Tomatlan town, where we’ll relax by the river, complete our bird checklist, and enjoy a light lunch before returning to Puerto Vallarta.
Our return to Marina Vallarta area will be around 1:30 p.m
