A mountain hike to the tiny hidden beach of Colomitos, followed by snorkeling among pufferfish, angelfish, and sea turtles.

Get to know and enjoy Nature with these complementary activities! The south of Puerto Vallarta has great natural attractions, where the tropical coast and the low deciduous forest of the Mexican Pacific meet in enchanting landscapes. Your guide will take you through the mountain along a path used for decades to reach the villages south of the Bay, pointing out gigantic fig trees, plumerias, hibiscus, and the most common animals of the site. Descending from the mountain path, vegetation opens to Colomitos — one of the smallest beaches on the coast of Banderas Bay — home to pufferfish, angelfish, damselfish, sea urchins and, with a bit of luck, rays and sea turtles. Distance covered: approximately 3 miles each way (6 miles total). Terrain is natural and uneven, with multiple steps.

Itinerary

8:30 a.m.: meet your guide at Marina Vallarta, registration and snorkeling gear delivery
Drive south through Puerto Vallarta to Boca de Tomatlán, hike along the mountain trail
Snorkeling at Colomitos beach, then a snack before hiking back
~2:30 p.m.: arrival back in Puerto Vallarta

“Such fantastic experience with Ecotours. I can't recommend them enough and Maggie, who was our guide on two trips. She has so much knowledge on the eco systems and wildlife. She is kind, supportive and enthusiastic. She helped me get through the tunnel to the Mariatas beach and arranged a special gluten free vegan roll for lunch. We took the hike and snorkel trip. The hike was really beautiful and not long, although could get steep and slippery in places. The Mariatas trip we took next was really lovely. We got to hear all about the birds and how they take care of the area. The beach was worth visiting, although slightly scary getting through the tunnel! On the way back we saw a few whales. One was close by so we stopped Maggie put a hydrophone into the water so we could listen to it's song! It was incredible! Go to see these guys because they really care about them environment!”

“Our adventure started with a 2k hike along a coastal trail to Playa Colomitos. The hike brings you through multiple habitats, beautiful views and ends in a wonderfully secluded cove. Our guide, Micheal, was extremely knowledgeable of the flora and fauna. The hike was not easy, but Michael ensured we made it to the cove safely all the while pointing out the unique birds, plants, reptiles and fish along the way. We snorkeled the rocks and relaxed on a pristine beach. Instead of the challenging hike back, our group opted to take a water taxi. Military Macaws, iguanas, and a school of puffer fish were just some of the trips highlights. Recommend only for the physically fit....bring hiking boots!”
