A Full-Day Birdwatching Journey Through the Forests and Wetlands of Banderas Bay
Discover the extraordinary birdlife and natural landscapes surrounding Banderas Bay on a birdwatching journey that takes you through three distinct environments: tropical forest, the wetlands of the Ameca River, and the coastal mangroves of Boca de Tomates. We begin our adventure in the tropical semi-deciduous forest near Desembocada, on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta. This diverse habitat is home to an impressive variety of birds, including Crane Hawks, Elegant Quail, warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, trogons, and parrots. From the forest, we continue toward the Ameca River, the natural boundary between Jalisco and Nayarit. Here, the river and surrounding wetlands create an important habitat for a variety of resident and migratory birds. Our journey concludes at the Boca de Tomates Estuary, where we explore coastal wetlands and mangrove habitat. Keep an eye out for White Ibises, herons, egrets, sandpipers, terns, and, depending on the season and conditions, species such as kingfishers and Common Black Hawks. This small-group experience offers a chance to discover the remarkable variety of habitats and birdlife found around Banderas Bay, from the tropical forest to the Pacific coast. “Our guide was very knowledgeable about the various species of birds and very patient in answering questions. Use of the scope was also very helpful as well. We also appreciated at the end of the tour going over all of the birds that we saw and the checklist (which we were able to keep) will be very helpful in recalling what we saw. Would have appreciated a bit more "shore bird" watching and perhaps in an alternate location other than the one we visited. Overall, a very pleasant experience.”
