San Blas, Nayarit, is internationally known as Mexico's most popular birdwatching destination — wetlands, mangroves and dry forest host at least 300 bird species.
The port of San Blas is located in the state of Nayarit, about three hours north of Puerto Vallarta. Founded during the Spanish colony, it was one of the two main ports on the Pacific Ocean. It is currently a quiet fishing village, internationally known as the most popular birdwatching destination in Mexico. Around San Blas you'll find wetlands, estuaries and mangroves — La Tovara, with its extensive mangrove forests and brackish water channels, is the most important. There are also mountain areas with dry and oak forests. At least 300 bird species can be found in the area, 25 of them endemic. Hotel Paraíso Miramar, a rustic but charming hotel facing the sea, is our resting place for one night (28 rooms, fans and TV, beautiful gardens). Minimum group size: 4 birders. “On our first visit to Puerto Vallarta my wife and I took a tour up to the mountain town of San Sebastian Del Oeste. While the ride from our hotel was long, bumpy at times, and very winding through the mountains the town itself was great to see. It is a small village with historic structure, some of which I have already reviewed, shops, restaurants and a big plaza. Our tour company was supposed to have us visit a coffee plantation there but it was not really a plantation at all. I think our biggest disappointment with San Sebastian Del Oeste was not with this small historic town but with the tour company and their presentation of the tour they offered...San Sebastian Del Oeste was nice and the day we visited the town was bustling with visitors and locals celebrating Mexico's Independence Day, September 16th....Choose your tour company wisely....”
